Traveling from San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to La Fortuna is a beautiful and scenic journey of about 2.5 to 3 hours. As you drive, you will watch the landscape transform from the busy city valleys into the lush, emerald-green tropical rainforests surrounding the Arenal Volcano. Choosing the right transport option depends on your budget, travel group, and adventure style.
1. Car Rentals (Most Flexible Option)
Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring La Fortuna at your own pace. The main routes connecting San José to La Fortuna are fully paved and well-maintained.
- The Route: Drive along Route 1 (General Cañas Highway) towards San Ramón. Once in San Ramón, take Route 702 north through the scenic towns of Bajo Rodríguez and La Tigra, leading you straight into La Fortuna.
- Navigation: Use Waze or Google Maps rather than traditional GPS. Download offline maps before departing, as cell reception can fluctuate in mountain passes.
- Secure Parking: When you stay at Leonaras Arenal, you have free access to secure, gated private parking inside the property, meaning your rental vehicle remains safe.
2. Shared or Private Shuttles (Most Relaxing Option)
If you prefer not to navigate mountain curves, shuttles are a safe, comfortable alternative.
- Private Shuttles: Cost between $140 and $180 for up to 6 people. A driver meets you directly at the airport arrivals gate and takes you straight to our guest house.
- Shared Shuttles: Operators like Interbus and Tropical Tours run daily shuttles for approximately $55 per person. These must be booked in advance and run on fixed morning and afternoon schedules.
3. Public Bus (Most Budget-Friendly)
For budget travelers, the public bus is a cost-effective option.
- Direct Bus: Autotransportes Venecia operates a direct daily bus from the Terminal 7-10 station in downtown San José to La Fortuna. It departs at 8:40 AM and costs around $5.
- Indirect Route: Take a bus from San José to Ciudad Quesada, and then catch a frequent connecting bus to La Fortuna. This route adds about an hour to the trip.
No matter how you choose to travel, once you arrive in La Fortuna, you will find our cozy private property guest house ready for you, just 4 minutes from the downtown park and right next to the best local adventure activities.
